Google Cloud Professional Security Operations Engineer Study Strategy¶
What kind of exam this is¶
Two hours, 50-60 multiple choice and multiple select questions. Google does not publish a passing score. Multiple select questions say how many answers to choose, so read the stem for the count.
Reading questions¶
- Identify the layer: data (ingestion, parsing, context), detection (rules), hunting (searching), response (cases and playbooks) or health (monitoring). Most distractors belong to the wrong layer.
- Identify the platform: SCC for posture and cloud threats, SecOps for ingestion, correlation, YARA-L and SOAR, GTI for intelligence and external exposure, Cloud Logging/Monitoring/BigQuery for logs and metrics.
- Order matters: normalise, then enrich, then detect, then respond. If the question describes missing fields, fix the parser before touching rules.
- Prefer the managed feature built for the job over a custom script, and the least disruptive effective action in response.
Distinctions to own¶
- SecOps, SCC and GTI: what each owns.
- Reference list and data table; single rule and composite detection.
- Stats search and UDM search; SCC graph and Entity Context Graph.
- Event data and entity data; parser and parser extension.
- Single-event and multi-event rules;
match, outcome, condition. - String, regex and CIDR reference lists.
- Hunt and retrohunt; curated detections cannot be retrohunted.
- Logs Explorer, Log Analytics, BigQuery: use by scale and question.
- Admin Activity versus Data Access logs: Data Access is off by default except BigQuery.
- Automation versus manual action.
- Silent source detection.
Weights¶
| Section | Weight | Time share |
|---|---|---|
| Data management | ~20% | Largest, with a new threat intelligence task; foundational |
| Detection engineering | ~20% | Largest; learn YARA-L, data tables, composite rules |
| Threat hunting | ~18% | Large |
| Incident response | ~18% | Large; playbooks and cases |
| Platform operations | ~13% | Steady |
| Observability | ~11% | Smallest; do not skip health monitoring |
